Randy has 44 years experience in sulfur recovery and on-line process analytics. He joined Western Research in 1974 to work with their sulfur recovery testing group and then with the process gas analyzer group, (now AMETEK Process Instruments).

Randy graduated in Chemical Engineering from Southern Alberta Institute of Technology. He is past director of the ISA Analysis Division and product manager, sulfur recovery analyzers at AMETEK.

Abstract: In 2015 the Middle East became the world’s largest sulfur producing region with the startup of the Shah gas processing plant in Abu Dhabi. With an excess of 200 sulfur recovery units (SRU) in the region reduction of SO2 emissions is paramount. Reducing emissions requires optimization of the process which requires accurate and reliable measurement using a hot-wet mass emission SO2 analyzer system. Reliability for a hot-wet analyzer is largely a matter of the primary sample conditioning at the sample point which is hostile both inside the stack as well as outside on the platform. Add to this; the conditions stated on the instrument data sheet never accurately predict the presence of SO3 which is quite common, the root cause of plugging and extreme corrosion. The paper will cover the development for an optimal sample handling system with the direct input from the analyzer team at legacy gas plant in the region. A reliability standard was agreed upon and the process conditions varied from the normal 2,000 ppm SO2 up to 20,000 ppm to demonstrate the efficacy of the sample handling solution.
