Sample Conditional System (SCS) for GC to analyze the Gas Stream of 3-phase Fixed Test Separator (FTS)

Innovation in Analytical Techniques

Abstract: The 3-phase Fixed Test Separator (FTS) widely used in Oil & Gas industry for periodic testing of wells. The 3-phase Gas FTS is used to test the gas well while 3 phase or sometimes 2 phase FTS is used for testing of oil wells. Usually, the FTS is common for many wells and use to test the wells having producing gas from different reservoirs. Also, the distance between wells and FTS varies greatly. The fluid composition also varies due to change of P&T as distance varies from FTS. The above-mentioned fact, pose great challenges while testing the gas wells, as each well has a different fluid composition which also changes with time.

Usually, V-cone or Orifice is used to measure the gas flow rate for wells being tested. These meters are sensitive to the change in Molecular Weight (MW). To calculate the exact MW, the gas composition is required and hence Gas Chromatograph (GC) is required to install at FTS gas outlet stream.

The present paper will discuss innovative Sample Conditional System (SCS) installed at BAB-Gas 3-Ph FTS to provide the accurate and water free sample to GC. The challenge is to remove the water from the sample and does not allow it to carry over to GC. The well testing is not a continuous process but batch process so the SHS was designed to take care for all cases like “Start of test”, “End of test”, “Sludge carry over”, “Standby mode
